I purchased some weld on bead locks and was told that I needed an anti coning ring since I am running iroks, anyone running an anti coning ring or have an opinion of them.

I think there is even a part number floating around in a thread somewhere here on RME for certain wheel sizes.

Ya, when Von and Carl told me about it back then I thought they were sniffing the welding gas. However, it works and it's cheep.

What is coning? Why is it prevalent on iroks? How does the belt solve the problem?

It's when the outer beadlock ring 'cones' inward from the torque of the bolts due to clamping the tire on the outer side and no support on the inside of the ring. This is just a problem with regular DYI beadlocks.
The thicker the bead of the tire, the more coning effect you will have. Super Swamper tires of any sort are known for their thicker tire beads. I have the same problem with my SX's, but I have done nothing to prevent it.

what he said, and the Iroks have an exceptionally thick bead, thus making them even worse. With that said, I never did anything about it with my Iroks, I only tightened my bolts on my DIY beadlocks to (IIRC) about ~10-15ftlbs, the ring just barely starts to cone and I never had any leaks, I could air my tires to whatever PSI and a month later they would still be at that same PSI.
